China Ranks First Globally with 44 UNESCO-listed Intangible Cultural Heritage Items

On December 5, 2024, Beijing time, at the 19th session of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of UNESCO held in Asunción, Paraguay, it was resolved through evaluation that the “Traditional Spinning, Dyeing, Weaving and Embroidery Techniques of the Li Ethnic Group,” the “Qiang New Year Festival,” and the “Traditional Design and Practices for Building Chinese Wooden Arch Bridges” be transferred from the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.With this update, China now has a total of 44 items inscribed on UNESCO’s intangible cultural heritage lists and registers, ranking first in the world. Among them, 39 items are on the Representative List, 4 items are on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding, and 1 item is on the Register of Good Safeguarding Practices.
